Profile Photo Image Quality
I think by default, profile photos (at least in my installation) are low quality and pixellated. Are there image settings that I'm missing? Although it may just be that the users are uploading small photos.

You may increase the size of the loaded pic like via the way described here https://unacms.com/d/micro-avatars-really-too-small
But it will affect to the images uploaded after your manipulation with DB.
