I renamed "Groups" to "Tribes" and after 2 updates the changes are untouched.

For me, it also kept the changes after creating a fresh install on a new server with new hosting. If you migrate, make sure you are moving files from the HTML folder to the correct directories to ensure no data loss.

You shouldn't have any issues with names reverting as long as you aren't changing / moving core files
