I run a dog site and had several very popular forums over the last few years... I tell you its a "dog eat dog" world out there when it comes to dog people being nasty to each other.  Moderation was tough.  I made an account and warned the members the if they ever see that one online someone was going to get spanked and deleted.  I also did away with the suspension or temporary banning as it was too much work.  

Magically - some people left of their own accord or modified their behavior. Moderation is always difficult but necessary.

Mods just need to know where to invest their time and effort.  Would also be good to take the pertinent questions, requests for help etc and make a very useful FAQ or post in that help group that someone created.

If someone has to ask a question after searching it is probably because the info it not available or easily found.
