I will have to be totally honest, I do enjoy the update, but one thing I would really like to see down the road if possible is the ability to add our own emojis to the shoutbox...Many other boards' shoutbox allows for custom emojis, and I think that messenger here would definitely benefit from it(custom emojis being able to be added by admin) Most of them I believe use BBcode for them as well
One other thing I noticed is that to add initial reaction to message you have to click the 3 dot menu next to the message, but once a reaction is added there is an add reaction button below message. Is that by design or should the add reaction button be below all messages?

Yes, you’ll be able to upload custom emojis/reactions. The library supports it and we will build UI tools for it in fiture updates.
as for reaction trigger - yes, current setup is like that by design. As we use it more we will look for further improvements.

I would be curious on how this would be possible currently. is there a folder on the server that the images would just be uploaded to?

By default, the all media files are stored in separate folder in Stroage directory on yout server as other medai files from UNA. It is not a problem to add any number of other storage folders to save custom Emoji or any other images.
