I added a new polyglot language key for the persons app called "__icon__ __image__" and set the text to something arbitrary (without recompiling the language) and now it appears as it should on the site. The arbitrary text does not show up in the info block on the person's profile page (that's good), so I think that the person's app is missing a language key called "__icon__ __image__" or maybe it is looking for that language key, but it doesn't use it. I am using Artificer template.
