Think of timeline being a gym, all sorts of machines are stored there. If you want a machine that you don't have, you go to the original company, purchase the machine, have it delivered to your gym and now that machine appears in your gym. It's more or less the same concept, people post in post/create a discussion, poll, group, etc....and it appears in timeline.
