I've downloaded from GitHub, for just the reasons you gave. It allows all testing. Even the messenger app, to test, you will need to setup a jot server for that test. You will not be able to upgrade/update the site or convert that site to a working one. But you can see how all of them work. It's how I've done all installs of sites I've worked on or own.
