Following vs Join Feature

Quick question:

What is the difference between following and joining a space or any other entity?

There is no difference between the joining and following process for the public spaces. The groups and events will require to be joined anyway.

I thought that following was some sort of means to say notify me of new posts and joining had some exclusive privileges.
