What would be involved to have the ability to join as a person or organization on the sign up page.

Would this ever be implemented into UNA?

UNA requires to have the account first, so you may go to the Studio->Pages->System->Homepage section, press the Add blocks button, then switch to System and find the Sign Item like on the pic and make it visible only for the Unauthenticated Permission Level.
