It would be cool if you could assign a new user directly to a group or space when they are registering to the site.
It would help build the communities within your site and increase activity
I know Dolphin had an app for that through a 3rd party.

Sorry, but it is possible only via code addon. With the standard tools, you may redirect users to the group home (or browse) page with the added info block. In this block will be placed the message about necessary join to group.
