When you have good amount of people using your website, then you have chances of making money using different strategies. First you need to define the goal of your website, what kind of service or business model you have set.
1] If you make subscription based model, then people pay you monthly for using services [e.g. dating website].
2] If you make free website, then you can show them advertisements.
3] If you don't want to do 2], then you can sell few items on your website as you have customers visiting your website who are potential buyers of something.
4] If you don't want to do 3] you can use referral programs from other websites, which usually sells something. If they use your referral link, you get % of that particular sell.
5] There are many other models, which are combination of 1234 and 5.
6] Someone may add some other model.
At the end of the day, it doesn't matter what model you start with. First you need to create the users for website. Once you have them, then you can start or think of revenuew model. DON'T Start with Revenue model first. You may not move (most probably) an inch, if you do that. If people like what you offer on website, then they start or become willing to pay for it.
