As my community grows, I would like to use groups or spaces and direct them to subdomains.

Subdomains are created by you via your server whether CPanel or Webmin depending on self-hosted or using a hosting company. Creating Spaces or Groups will not create a subdomain.
It isn't possible now in UNA, but you can make redirects from subdomain to particular group manually via .htaccess file
