I am currently using version 12.0.1 and i want to upgrade to 12.10. I made some changes with the polygot keys And few other things. Will upgrading a newer version override the current settings
If those keyes exist in the update package then yes, the values will be changed. So backup your site before the upgrade anyway to avoid the loosing data.
It means, that if you've edited translations which exist in language keys in uploading update, then you may lose you changes. Usually, in update langs there are only new languages keys, so you don't need to worry about problems.
But if you have a lot of changes, it would be better to make database backaup just in case.

I still dont get the backup aspect. Please explain better..
