In looking at my dashboard it would appear I have a few people like that with no profile name

  Test it for works good! Maybe you need play with persons module settings. Disable letter for profile creation etc.

  Out of almost 500 users I estimate only 5-10 people have this issue. I would think that as the site owner I would be able to fix this?
