2 things I did when I faced similar issue.
- increase your php limits.. max execution time, max memory etc.
- run the Cron tasks few times. Give few minutes before each call.
Few additional hints.
If you already had a failed attempt, you can try to just run the Cron tasks.
Sometimes it's better to do a restore to original state from the backups and try again from beginning.

OMG thank you! Lol have no idea what a Cron task is so as far as I got with that was looking it up in Cpanel and seeing the "you should have a clue about Linux" warning, which I don't - BUT after completing all of the previous steps the upgrade is working on my test installation. I think it was the PHP limits, I looked up a tutorial online and what my Cpanel said was super low in comparison to the screenshot in the tutorial. ^.^
