Comment to 'Replies in Discussions are Confusing'
  • Yes, this is arranged like that intentionally. In typical Forum format each post is displayed as equally important, even if it is a reply to someone else's post. If you show replies hierarchy is becomes indistinguishable from a blog post with comments, which defeats the main purpose of having a Discussion format, where a new reply would make the Discussion appear on top of the list of all Discussions. See, if you, say, reply to the first comment and it doesn't show in the end of the line, it will be hard for someone to find your latest post if they open the Discussion from the main list.

    • I admit that at the beginning, when I discovered the principle, I did not appreciate much. After careful thought, I now find that it is particularly well thought out and well adapted for the particular case of forums.
I find that this principle helps to stay focused on the main subject and does not encourage deviations, like a tree with too many branches.
On the other hand, I throw an idea like that, I do not know if it is good but why not display like this directly? (see print screen)
A new member does not really have the reflex to go over the arrow while the information it gives to flyby is very important.

      • Yeah, it took me a minute to realize that's what that did...and I'm seasoned at this stuff...so maybe there would be a better option to let people know what that is?
