That setting causes the map to display type specific icons - group icon for groups, event icon for events, profile icon for profile and so on, instead of a default marker icon (reverse drop) for everything. It doesn't shows content's thumbnails (this potentially would require too much server resources to obtain an icon for all locations that could appear on a map).
