I want to remove if possible or make it less distracting.

In the latest versions of dark Protean we've made so. Bu you may add the class like:
div.bx-tl-item div.bx-tl-item-activity .bx-menu-custom li .sys-action-counter-icon, div.bx-tl-item div.bx-tl-item-activity .bx-menu-custom li .sys-action-do-icon, div.bx-tl-item div.bx-tl-item-activity .bx-menu-custom li .bx-menu-item-icon, div.bx-tl-item div.bx-tl-item-manage a .bx-menu-item-icon
background-color: [your color];
}
to your mix for changing that.
