can these two positions on the left and right of the site be used for advertising?

      Yes, you may create own modules/boonex/[your template]/data/template/system/_sub_header.html and _sub_footer.html files and add the banner code before and after this div:

      <div class="bx-page-wrapper bx-def-centered bx-def-padding-sec-leftright bx-def-page-width bx-def-box-sizing">

      But it's better to use special mod for this.

          We have Banners app which allows to post ads in Header and Footer of all pages. Also side banners can be put in page blocks.
