As Baloo mentioned you can embed messenger into your UNA Groups (or other contexts like Events, Spaces and Orgs). Then the messenger will create a thread visible to anyone who can see the context. Once they join the discussion it will show in their messengers. 

Alternatively, you can just create a new message and select any number of participants, which would comprise an ad-hoc private group.
