:-) Well I understand both points of view in this case ... you're right both, he's right, on doubles notifications, but you're also right, we must be able to follow a topic without for it must follow its author on all his posts. So what solution?
If you ask me, I'd keep the "subscribe to a discussion" and debug the notifications. Alex knows it's going to create a whole lot of trouble, but what doesn't? :)
