I've looked everywhere, even here in messenger, no 'reply in thread' ever shows on any message menu

  It is on, but it never shows anywhere. Not even here on UNA. How do you get 'Reply in thread' to work?

  This option is visible if the two-column mode is not enabled and if you are the message owner or have permission to moderate the conversation.
  We plan to enable this option for all participants in future updates.
